About Vouni, Cyprus

Location of the Village

This small, beautiful, traditional, wine village is located in the Limassol district in the Krasochoria (wine villages) region, on an altitude of 800 meters above sea level.

The Village’s Name

The village was named Vouni due its location, where it is built. Vouni means “low/small mountain”.

History

It is believed that the village of Vouni existed since the Middle Ages, as (according to the Great Cyprus Encyclopedia) it is marked on Venetian maps as “Voni”.

However, it was marked north of the village of Kivides and not at its present location.

In the old days, there were 4 settlements in the area of the present village. These 4 settlements were built on low mountains. Due to the plague that struck the island in 1692, three of the settlements were desolated. They were called Pera Vouni, Velonaka and Ais Mamas.

Vouni was the settlement that was salvaged. Its protector was Saint John the Baptist. The residents from the 3 settlements that survived the plague moved to Vouni village.

A Wine Village

Vouni is a wonderful wine producing village that has cultivated vines since ancient times.

Up until the 90’s, 40% of the land of Vouni was covered with vineyards.

However, nowadays, due to rural depopulation, viticulture has been significantly reduced.

In 2001 the number of residents in Vouni was 136.
