What a charming village!
Lofou village is located in the Limassol district (Lemesos in Greek) at an altitude of 780 meters. It’s only 26 km away from Limassol city and it’s surrounded by the neighboring villages of Pera Pedi and Ayios Therapon.
Lofou is built on top of a hill (hill means lofos in Greek, hence “Lofou”). It has retained the name Lofou since Byzantine times.
Due to the Arab invasions, the islanders were forced to abandon the coast to protect themselves. Therefore, they built the village of Lofou during those invasions.
According to Leontios Machairas, the historian, Lofou was gifted around 1392 along with some other villages by the King James I to his brother Janot de Lusignan, Lord of Beirut.
According to Porakos (2004), during the British rule, Lofou was transformed into a large vine. That changed the image of the village due to the continuous plantations of vines.
Today, Lofou is a charming, agrotourism resort in the beautiful mountains of Limassol.
Grape Feast = The village of Lofou holds a Grape Feast every year at the end of September to celebrate its harvest. Visitors can taste the delicious traditional delicacies made from grape juice and watch the locals how they make them.
It’s an experience you might want to add in your itinerary.
Also, during the Grape Feast, there are folkloric entertainment and wine tasting.
Palouzes or Cyprus Grape Jelly = a pudding made with two basic ingredients – either fresh grape juice during autumn or concentrated grape juice (petimezi or epsima, in Cypriot) in case no fresh juice is available. Flour is added to the juice and it is cooked until the jelly is produced.
