2. Limassol Tourist Attractions: Kolossi Castle

This Medieval castle is located at the south edge of Kolossi village in the Limassol district, hence the name…”Kolossi Castle” or “Kolossi Medieval Castle”.

It’s an impressive square limestone building comprised of three floors. It was originally built during the Frankish period in the 13th century but it was destroyed during the raids of the Mameluke tribes in 1425-26.

The existing castle was built in the 15th century upon the ruins of the 13th century castle by the Great Commander Louis de Magnac.

The walls of the Castle, also known as Fort, contain an aqueduct, a sugar factory and the Byzantine church of St. Efstathios.

Kolossi Castle is one of the most significant Frankish fortification works. It’s associated with the presence of monastic knight orders in Cyprus, the Knights of the Order of St. John of Jerusalem and the Knights Templar.

During their stay on the island, the Knights produced and exported a sweet wine called “vin de Commanderie”.

Today, having the same name for 8 centuries, Commandaria wine is one of the oldest named wines in the world. It’s also one of the traditional wines of the island.

Next to the Kolossi Castle you will find ruins of a 14th century sugar mill.
