1. Stavrovouni Monastery

The famous Stavrovouni Monastery is a Greek Orthodox monastery built on a beautiful rocky peak of the mountain Stavrovouni in the Larnaca district, near Pyrga village. It’s one of the most significant and ancient monasteries on the island!

It is believed that the monastery was founded in the 4th century by Saint Elena, the mother of the Emperor Constantine the Great...and that’s why it is considered to be one of the oldest monasteries in the world!

The location of the monastery and the route to get there are both amazing! The views from the monastery (on a clear day) are breathtaking!

So, if you decide to include an adventure to the Stavrovouni Monastery in your holiday, you will undoubtedly have the most memorable experience!

Please read the important note below!

Important Note: Please note that the monks in the Stavrovouni Monastery have very strict rules (similar to those in Mount Athos in Greece). The rules that must be followed are…

  • Only men are permitted to enter the monastery, not ladies, unfortunately
  • The use of cameras or video is strictly not permitted
  • Men wishing to enter the monastery must be appropriately dressed at all times…long trousers (no shorts) and shirts with long sleeves. Men should have their shoulders and knees covered at all times.

However, women are permitted to enter the charming, unique, small, Church of All Saints of Cyprus. The church is located at the entrance to the parking area of Stavrovouni Monastery…so they can admire the view from there!
