About Arsos, Cyprus

What a scenic village Arsos is!

The Village’s Location

The lovely village of Arsos is located in the Limassol district, built on the slopes of Laona mountain at an altitude of 850 meters. It’s just 42 km from Limassol city and 45 km from Paphos.

The Name of the Village

There are two versions about how the village got its name.

The first version is the following…

…it is believed that the name “Arsos” comes from the Holy Alsos (grove) of the Goddess Aphrodite, where the village is built.

The second version is that the name “Arsos” comes from its status as one of the four towns founded by Ptolemy Philadelphos in the honor of Arsinoe.

History

From 1920 to 1960, there was an important development in Arsos and that’s why the residents of the village were total population of a 2000.

However, due to the unprofitable viticulture, the bad road network (in those days) and the search for a better fortune in the cities, most residents moved to the cities of the island. That resulted to the decay and abandonment of the village.

Nowadays, there are only around 300 residents left in the village of Arsos who keep the traditions and customs untouched by time.

The Arsos Development Association

The Arsos Development Association aims to maintain the traditions and customs of the villagers of Arsos. Another aim of the Association is to preserve the village’s architectural character together with modern development in order to make the village a viable place for the young people.

The main activities of the Association are tree planting every January, Eastern festivities, the Cyprus night in June, the August Festival, the Palouze Feast, etc.

Wine Producing Village

Arsos is one of the largest wine producing villages on the island.

Since ancient times, the village of Arsos has been practicing the winemaking tradition. Today the locals of the village make their own wine (especially red wine). They grow mainly dark grapes, xynisteri and new varieties suitable for wine production.

The wine is kept in big earthenware jars.

In Arsos, they also produce the famous spirit of Zivania.

Arsos’ Famous Dishes

Famous delicacies that can be found in Arsos are…

  • Palouzes
  • Epsima
  • Biscuits with epsima
  • Shoudzioukos
  • Kiofterka
  • Kattimerka
  • Arkatena
  • Glyko
  • and many others

Most of the above dishes are sweet traditional delicacies (like palouzes and shoudzioukos) made from grape juice.

Grape Feast = The village of Arsos holds a Grape Feast every year at the end of September to celebrate its harvest. Visitors can taste the delicious traditional delicacies made from grape juice and watch the locals how they make them.

It’s an experience you might want to add in your itinerary.

Also, during the Grape Feast, there are folkloric entertainment and wine tasting.

Palouzes or Cyprus Grape Jelly  = a pudding made with two basic ingredients – either fresh grape juice during autumn or concentrated grape juice (petimezi or epsima, in Cypriot) in case no fresh juice is available. Flour is added to the juice and it is cooked until the jelly is produced.

It’s a Cyprus Sweet and it’s delicious! You should try it out!

The church of the village is dedicated to Apostle Philippos, the Protector Saint of the village, and it’s located in the middle of Arsos. This church was built in the 13th century and has been repaired several times since then.

Specifically, the construction of the bell-tower dates back to the beginning of the 20th century, between the years 1912 and 1914. The women’s loft was constructed in 1948.

Next to the church is the chapel of Agia Mariamni, the sister of Apostle Philippos.

The name day of Apostle Philippos, the Protector Saint of Arsos village, is celebrated on the 14th of November. Every 14th of November, a fair takes place at the Square of the village.

Street vendors set their stands in the Square and sell their products to the villagers and worshippers who come from all over the island to the village for the fair to celebrate the Apostle’s name day.
